The Best Man

The Responsibilities of the Best Man

Being a best man is a lot of work. But do you actually know what that work entails? Here is a full breakdown of what a best man is actually responsible for when it comes to a wedding. Check out the list so that you have a solid idea of what is expected of you as you stand by the groom’s side on his big day.

1. Acting as a Witness

The best man acts as a witness to sign the couple’s marriage license after they exchange their vows. The maid/matron of honor also partners in this usually. If you’re serving as a best man, make sure you’re readily available for this after the ceremony so that you can sign on the dotted line.

2. Organizing the Bachelor Party

This is a long-held tradition, and a fun one at that. The best man gets to plan the bachelor party for the groom. It’s important to realize that these parties come in all forms these days. It can be something as simple as a night out on the town, a poker night, to something as elaborate as a weekend trip. Golf trips, casino nights, and beach vacations are all common bachelor party happenings. The best man has to figure out what best suits the groom and plan the party from there, coordinating with the other invitees.

3. Attending the Rehearsal

The best man, of course, needs to be at the rehearsal on the scheduled day prior to the wedding. The best man may also be responsible for rallying the troops for this event and helping to ensure that everyone knows what they’re supposed to do, where they’re supposed to be, and where they should stand. The best man often also makes a short toast during the rehearsal dinner.

4. Transportation Extraordinaire

The best man is traditionally the person to handle day-of transportation for the bride, groom, and wedding party. This means that you can be in charge of driving the couple to their reception, coordinating the limo or bus, and making sure that the newlyweds have a ride after the wedding if needed. This takes planning and coordination, so it’s important to gain an understanding of what transportation is even needed prior to the big day so that you can plan accordingly.

5. Keeping the Groomsmen on Schedule

Wedding days are hectic. The best man needs to ensure that he works to keep the groomsmen on schedule during the day so that there’s no unnecessary delays, and that everyone shows up when and where they should.

6. Coordinating a Gift for the Groom

It’s traditional for the groomsmen to give a gift to the groom on his wedding day. It’s the responsibility of the best man to coordinate this gift. Figure out a gift idea and ask for input from the rest of the groomsmen to source ideas. Make sure that everyone chips in and then purchase the gift and get it ready to give to the groom on the big day.

7. Holding the Wedding Rings

One of the most important responsibilities of the best man is to hold the wedding bands during the ceremony to hand off to the couple when the time comes. In addition to holding the rings, the best man may have to hold other important things for the groom, like his phone or wallet.

8. Making a Toast

The best man is traditionally the first one to make a toast at the wedding reception, paying tribute to his relationship with the groom and wishing him and his new spouse luck in their marriage. It’s important to work on this toast ahead of time instead of just making it up on the fly, and to do some storytelling about the couple to really make it special.

Being a best man is hard work, but it’s a big honor to be chosen for this role on someone’s big day. This list will help ensure that you carry out all of your responsibilities flawlessly when the time arrives.
